Service Description

Welcome to our second year of Art History lectures at The Edinburgh Drawing School. We are thrilled to be keeping things closer to home this term - partly in honour of the exciting National Gallery extension - by presenting an exciting array of Scottish art subjects. We look forward to opening our doors on Wednesday evenings 6 - 8pm at 13 Great King Street, where you will be greeted by a passionate speaker and a much needed tea or coffee. Due to the success of the previous year, we have appointed Samuel Vince to curate our lectures for the 2024 - 2025 period, owing also to his interest in Scottish art. He will open the series and present the opening lectures this term. In collaboration with The University of Edinburgh, we present topics of around two hundred years in Scottish visual media, including portraiture by Raeburn, still life with the Scottish Colourists and the genre of Sir William Quiller Orchardson. Hardly insular however, Scottish art from this period is widely informed by international developments - especially those from the continent - making this series at once familiar and wonderfully eclectic. Below is a list of our topics this term, the dates of which may be subject to light rearrangement. We hope to see you all soon for the adventures to come! Week 1: Silent drama: The life and oeuvre of Sir William Quiller Orchardson - Presented by Samuel Vince Week 2: The Scottish Colourists: Post Impressionism in Scotland and France - Presented by Samuel Vince Week 3: A Glasgow Style: Art Nouveau and The Glasgow Four at the fin de siècle - Presented by Samuel Vince Week 4: The Enlightenment portraiture of William Aikman: His life, oeuvre and legacy - Presented by Daniel Hayden-Seymour Week 5: The landscapes of Nasmyth and McCulloch: Issues of modernity and nostalgia - Presented by Daniel Wilson Week 6: Parallels in Celtic and Finnish Painting: From National Romanticism to Revivalism - Presented by Anna Hannola Week 7: John Lavery and the Glasgow Boys: Questions of identity and style - Presented by Maddy Kelly Week 8: Sir Henry Raeburn: A Scottish titan of his genre - Presented by Daniel Hayden-Seymour Image credit: Sarah Wadsworth, later Mrs Robert Hartshorn Barber (1797–1873), c.1820 by Sir Henry Raeburn
