Service Description

Dive into the art of charcoal drawing in this 8-week course, perfect for both beginners and experienced artists seeking to explore advanced techniques with charcoal. Using Nitram charcoal, charcoal powder, and a variety of papers, each session introduces innovative ways to create bold, textured, and atmospheric artwork. Whether working with dry or wet mediums, students will develop technical skills. The Course Will Cover: Mastery of Core Charcoal Techniques: Advanced skills in mark-making, blending, and erasing to create dynamic, expressive drawings. - Developing Tonal Range and Depth: Techniques for achieving rich tonal contrasts, layered shading, and atmospheric depth to enhance compositions. - Capturing Gesture and Movement: Expressive line work with varied line weight to convey energy, rhythm, and mood. - Integration of Wet and Dry Techniques: Experimentation with liquid charcoal alongside dry applications for unique textures and multidimensional effects. - Exploration of Natural Textures: Rendering organic forms with detail and contrast, capturing the rhythms and depth of natural elements. - Building a Cohesive Portfolio: Completion of a final project with critique, helping students refine their unique, expressive style. This course will equip students with the professional skills needed to elevate their drawing skills. EDS provides - A variety of pencils - rubber erasers - Blending stumps - cutting equipment - paintbrushes Student Provides - Putty eraser - Nitram Batons Assorted Charcoals Pack of 8 (contains charcoal sticks 2x H, 2x HB, 2x B, and 2x B+) and sandpaper sharpening pads or Nitram Starter Kit 5 Piece Set, which includes a sharpening block Zuzanna Salamon is a representational artist whose work is deeply rooted in traditional techniques. She studied in Poland, Scotland, the Czech Republic, and Italy, experiences that have shaped her artistic approach. Zuzanna works with charcoal and oil paint. In 2020, she graduated from Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen with a degree in painting. Her art is a conversation between a deep respect for classical methods and a contemporary sensibility. Zuzanna’s work has garnered numerous awards, including the the de Laszlo Medal for Excellence at the RBA, the John Lynn Commemorative Award at the RSA, and the RSA John Kinross Scholarship. Her drawings have been exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Shows, the Royal Scottish Academy Annual Exhibitions, the Royal Society of British Artists Exhibition.

Cancellation Policy

We will provide a 50% refund if you give written advance notice up to 30 days before the course start date. 0% refund 30 days before a course starts. Please note there is an administration fee of £5 payable in respect of such refunds to cover payment processing fees. You will need to inform a member of administration staff in writing by emailing EDS at info@edinburghdrawingschool.co.uk. Additionally, if you withdraw for any reason after the course has started you will not be entitled to a refund. We are a small business and we depend on every booking to ensure that classes can go ahead. If a tutor has to withdraw from teaching the scheduled course for any reason (medical/personal/professional) before the start of a scheduled course, during a scheduled course, if the course is 8 weeks long or scheduled as x3 terms of 8 weeks long each, The Edinburgh Drawing School will find a replacement tutor for the course designed by that tutor for The Edinburgh Drawing School. The course content will be the same as the originally booked course. A student will not be entitled to a refund should the school have no option but to find a replacement tutor. If a tutor leaves and starts work elsewhere, and a student prefers to take classes with them personally at the tutor's new workplace, that is at the discretion of the student and no refund is entitled to them or will be given. If a student is unable to attend a class due to medical/personal/professional reasons, then EDS must be informed immediately so that the tutor can be notified. If you are missing a class because you suspect that you have developed Covid-19, please let us know immediately so that we can alert fellow student and tutors. Non-attendance of classes/workshops does not automatically mean a refund, however EDS will assess the circumstance
