Service Description

Attempting to draw a portrait from life can be an exciting challenge that really engages the student of portraiture at any level of ability. This course is suited for absolute beginners, and for people who have drawn the portrait before, Kirstie will meet you at your level. This course is designed to take you through the process of creating a finished charcoal portrait drawing from a live model. We will be taking inspiration from and implementing twentieth century academic techniques, thus allowing the student to clearly develop through a staged process. A guide of these staged examples will be provided to every student at the start of the course, to support the structure of each day and to give a visual example of what to aim for, each day. By the end of the course students will have: - Been familiarised with the medium of charcoal and how to create nuanced mark making. - Have tackled the challenge of drawing a portrait from a live model. - Been guided through a drawing process so they can comfortably approach a charcoal portrait from life by applying concepts such as: composition, thinking in value, working with shadow edge, capturing likeness, learning how to take visual measurements, and constructing a head. Basic Composition & Envelope Shape An introduction to charcoal and some quick demonstrations of tackling the portrait from Kirstie. The students will then sketch from the model with her guidance. They will be shown how to measure from life, block in value, and how to achieve an accurate likeness. Blocking in Shadow, capturing a likeness Expanding on the techniques explored, students will focus on further refining their skills to achieve a higher quality drawing. They will have the opportunity to take two projects/portraits to a higher level thanks to the fundamentals considered the day prior. Taking your drawing to a finalised stage Students will spend time taking a drawing to a finished level. The goal will be to achieve a sense of likeness and a solid feeling of form, confidently handled in the medium of charcoal.
