Service Description

This class will encourage you to introduce more freedom and movement into your watercolours, whether it is the first time you have tried them, or if you have painted in watercolour over many years. The emphasis will be on spontaneity of technique and colour, bringing exuberance into your paintings through understanding the capabilities of watercolour. If the weather allows for it, The Edinburgh Drawing School garden will be used to paint 'en plein air', as a spontaneous or optional choice, however most classes will take place indoors with fresh flowers to paint from. This course is suitable for all levels from complete beginners to the more experienced watercolour painter. Since graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 1986 with a degree in Drawing and Painting, Jenny has been a professional artist exhibiting around the UK and abroad. She is known for her colourful and sensitive depictions of flowers and plants, both cultivated and wild. Jenny exploits the properties of watercolour, making its intrinsic qualities part of her paintings. Jenny was twice shortlisted for the ‘Marche d’Acqua’ international watercolour biennial prize, and has won 2 prizes at the Royal Watercolour Society in London. She is both a member and council member of the RSW and has been leading the Scottish group of artists at the annual international watercolour convention ‘Fabriano in Acquarello’ in Italy since 2017. www.jennymatthews.co.uk Materials: Watercolours: either pans or tubes including Permanent Rose Large palette/s (Jenny uses white dinner plates) Paintbrushes: variety of large and small including ¾ inch HB or B Pencil & eraser Paper towels/muslin Watercolour paper: your preferred brand/surface (Jenny uses Fabriano Artistico NOT/cold press) stretched sheet on board or at least 300gsm unstretched.
